Hey, my father gets a monitor from his girlfriend (because she got a laptop). He has an old PC with an Intel Pentium 2 inside and Windows 98 on it. This one isn't used because he had no monitor for it (his only one is used for his "real" PC) and now he wants to give it a use (maybe I'll get it).
Now to my question: Can I use Windows XP with that Intel Pentium 2 ?? Or will it be too slow ?? I can't install Windows 7 because my father won't buy a new OS for such an old PC, so I could only use Win95/98/2000/ME or XP. I know Win2000 isn't very good at old PC's but ME isn't really as good as 98. I think Win95 is too old so I've got Win98 and WinXP to choose. Which one do you recommend for me ??
Regards, Lord Jayson

For one, yes you can run Windows XP with Intel PII. It shouldn't be that slow. For two, obviously, recommending XP instead of '98.
Oh, and you will need at least 128MB RAM if you don't want it very slow, but I think you know that already.

For me, I would install either 95, 2k or XP. Never install Mistake Edition. EVAR.

I have a Pentium 2 PC too, and it has XP. It's pretty good, just make sure you at LEAST have 128mb of ram, if not, just stick with 95 (Faster than 98).

I had installed "Mistake Edition" for 8 years! It had worked well, but the best OS is Win XP (SP 3)! I have tried Se7en but XP is much faster and don't crash as often as Se7en. Only the new functions of Se7en are great (areosnap, aeroshake, new taskbar, ...) but they are made for XP as 3rd party programs. So now XP looks like Se7en and behaves like it but is much more stable. The only thing I miss in it are the transparent windows (borderskin and truetransparency doesn't really work fine!).
So: Choose XP!!!!

There's not only the Aero you can choose (I run Windows 7 RTM by ~saintlouiss in Sky with my own skin and Peter's ViStart). With SevenVG RTM you can use Basic32\48.

I know that there is also Basic 32/48. I have choosed the black the of SevenVG RTM. That is because I hate the blue themes of windows! I had changed to the Silver Luna Theme before SevenVG was out! Have a nice day, Schippenschorsch

As for the question about the RAM: I've got 256 MB to work with. I'll install TuneUp Utilities 2010, too, and then I'll enable the "Turbo Mode", maybe it is faster then...
Thanks for help!!

256mb should adequate enough for the PC. Although be careful not to put too much stuff on the PC, a Pentium 2 while have a hard time on almost any program past 2008, due to the fact that most are suited towards Duo Cores.

Project64 is post-2008 and runs very well on my laptop with a Pentium M 1400mhz CPU and 1.50GB RAM. I call the CPU old, since this was somebody elses 2004 model.

Today I saw 256 MB RAM for that PC in my default PC store for only 5 € (around 6,85 $ or 4,38 £). I'll ask my stepfather if that module is compatible with the PC I got from my father. If yes, then I'll buy that module.

Damn that is cheap. Be sure to check the voltage on the RAM module, and be sure that the motherboard can read the size, some computers back then had a limit on RAM. My old Windows 95, had a limit of 128mb....
